My Gift For Empathy Is What Led Me To Become A Therapist
Throughout my life, I have always had a gift for putting myself in other people’s shoes. For me, nothing is more fulfilling than to understand people and help them see their full potential.
Before becoming a therapist, I worked as a business owner connecting people to new opportunities. My favorite part was getting to know other people, learning about how they saw the world, and helping them improve their lives. This experience helped me recognize my gift for empathy and compassion. It’s part of why I’m a therapist today.
You are you and I am me, so we’ll always have our own unique perspectives on life, but therapy gives us a chance to learn from each other and tap into the bedrock of human emotion that we share. This is what makes the healing process so rich and rewarding.
My Approach To Therapy Is All About Healing From Trauma And Taking Back Your Power
I believe that each of us has a desire to be seen, heard, and loved. Yet throughout our lives, there are all kinds of traumas and hardships that prevent this desire from being fulfilled. Counseling can help you work through the stuck points in your life and experience deeper love and acceptance.
I specialize in treating anxiety and depression and I am very trauma-focused in my approach to therapy. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that unresolved trauma and adverse childhood experiences tend to color how we see the world. I understand how our past “scripts” can get in the way of creating something new for ourselves, and that’s why I seek to help clients change these scripts. The work I do is very empowering and focused on taking back the power that trauma took away. I’m interested in digging down to the roots and healing the unhealthy trauma patterns that you find yourself stuck in.
Ultimately, I see therapy as both a science and an art. The science involves using cutting-edge neuroscience and the latest research in brain-body-trauma connection to learn about mental health. The art is in how therapy uses this information to understand your life experience and create a larger reserve of inner strength. In this way, I combine psychoeducation with a deep desire to bring healing and growth into your life.
Who I Am Outside Of Therapy
Throughout my life, people have told me that I am steadfast, trustworthy, and always there as a landing pad. I was a business owner and property manager before becoming a therapist, so I understand the pressures of the business world. I know what it’s like to go through divorce, figure out how to co-parent, and deal with childhood trauma. Like many of my clients, my journey is one of healing from past hurt and reclaiming a fulfilling life for myself.
So what do I do when I’m not working? I read. A LOT. I drink coffee. A LOT. I get dressed every morning listening to Stephen Colbert. I have a busy life parenting a teenager and running around with my two big dogs, so I often find solace in tending to my plants and garden or cooking the latest recipe. I do my best to practice what I preach and balance the crazy with downtime. Gotta take the quiet moments, right?
I have a history of working in community mental health, having provided school-based counseling and served in addiction treatment programs focused on trauma and substance use recovery. Between my expertise in mental health and my own journey of healing and growth, I am confident that I can help you overcome the pain of the past and reclaim your confidence and power.
Lorianne Twill is a licensed therapist at The Growing Mind in Tustin, California. She has a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from Chapman University. She completed post-graduate studies in psychoanalytic theory, psychodynamic theory, and narrative techniques.
